Verse 1
The
D
Night
Before
Christmas
D
Christmas, when all through the house,
G
not a creature was stirring,
A
D
not even a mouse.
D
by the chimney with care,
D
Santa soon would be there.
A
G
D
And with their best blankets and
sweet sleeping caps,
they just settled down for a
long winter's nap.
F#m
D
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
they sprung from their beds
Bm
to see what was the matter.
D
Away to the window they flew like a flash,
tore open the shutters and threw
up the sash.
The moonlight glittered on
The children gazed out
at the garden below.
A
D
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
G
D
with a little old driver so lively and quick.
This was
G
Santa,
D
Father
A
D
Christmas, this was
Saint
D
G
A
D
More rapid than eagles his reindeer they came,
Bm
and he whistled and shouted and called them
Now
Dasher, now
Dancer, now
O
Comet,
O
Cupid,
O
Donner and
Blitzen,
F#m
To the top of the porch,
G
A
Now dash away, dash away,
G
And then the children heard
on the roof
Bm
The prancing and pawing
As they blinked in surprise and
turned right around.
G
Saint
Bm
Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur,
G
from his head to his foot,
Bm
D
and his clothes were all dirty
with ashes and soot.
G
Bm
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
G
D
A
with candy canes poking right out of his pack.
Bm
His eyes, how they twinkled!
G
His cheeks were like roses,
Bm
His happy little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
D
A
and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.
G
D
His boots were deep black, so white were his teeth,
Bm
G
with his white and red hats on his head like a wreath.
A
D
Bm
He had a broad face and a little round belly that
G
shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly.
A
Bm
D
He was chubby and plump, a jolly old elf,
Bm
G
and the children they laughed in spite of
themselves.
A
Bm
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
D
from this jolly elf they had nothing to dread.
A
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
and filled all the stockings, then
turned with a jerk,
D
and laying his finger on the side of his nose, and giving a nod
And up the chimney he rose.
D
to his team gave a whistle,
like the fluff on a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim,
Happy
G
D
Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
