Tom: A major
Verse 1
D
G
Now I've listened to tales that the
C
oldsters told from Bourke to Camooweal
G
And on dusty tracks in the southern states
D
G
from Orbost to Warracknabeal
Some were grave and some were gay
G
And each of the tellers always swore
D
G
that the tale that he told was true
Verse 2
G
Old Paddy the Dancer a swagman of note
C
who followed the 'Bidgee run
G
Found himself on the tucker track and
D
most of his food was done
G
So he pondered awhile and thought
C
at last as far as he could see
G
That he'd have to catch himself
D
G
a cod to cook on the coals for tea
Verse 3
G
So he rigged a line from binder twine that
C
he'd scrounged from a farmers hay
G
And then fashioned a hook from a rusty
D
nail that got stuck in his foot that day
G
Well he looked with pride on his fishing gear
C
and to try he could hardly wait
G
Then he saw at last as anglers do you must
D
G
cover your hook with bait
Verse 4
G
He remembered a tale that someone
C
told in the dim and distant past
G
That frogs were the things that the anglers
D
used for the fish to break their fasts
G
But frogs were as scarce as teeth on hens
C
or that's what he said to me
G
But he searched around till he found
D
G
a frog at the foot of a light wood tree
Verse 5
G
Well he stalked that frog on hands and knees
G
But a black snake coming the other
D
way had the same idea in view
G
But both of them grabbed together
C
but the snake was a fraction fast
G
It swallowed the frog but found itself
D
held in the swagman's grasp
G
Well he fished from his pocket a flask
Verse 6
G
C
he had of very potent grog
G
And said with a sigh it must be done
Verse 7
G
Well he squeezed that wriggling reptile's
C
neck til its jaws were opened wide
G
Then with tears in eyes he poured
D
the lot into the snakes' insides
G
Well it gave a gurgle and then a gulp
C
and then quite a twist or two
G
And there was that old frog in the
D
G
light of day almost as good as new
Verse 8
G
Well he grabbed that frog and hurried
C
away to bait up his rusty hook
G
And then lay back on the grassy bank by
D
the side of that peaceful brook
G
Then he felt a tap on his shoulderblade and
G
And there was that snake all bleary
D
eyed in its mouth was another frog
G
Verse 9
Well that was the tale that was told to me
C
at a camp on the reedy flat
G
Maybe it's true or maybe not
D
you'd best be the judge of that
G
But what I can hardly believe is,
C
is the way that he liked the grog
G
He would give it away to a worthless
D
G
snake for the sake of a useless frog
