Verse 1
Ab
Young cowboys always look up
to the older cowboys,
Db
and they hang on every
Ab
word.
But the older cowboys
don't always tell them the whole story.
When G .L. said he wouldn't buck,
I figured he would know.
Bbm
I needed one more pony in my
Ab
string.
Now, he wasn't very handsome,
but I didn't have a choice,
because I was just day -working in
the spring.
We was on the Wichita,
just south of Cedar Top.
I was on the outside circle all alone.
It was such a pretty morning.
I was taking in the sights
and I'd stopped to make
myself a rollier on,
so I hardly even noticed
when the covey flushed and flew.
To him it must have sounded like a
gun.
I started grabbing leather
as my makings blew away
and he lined out through the cedars on
the run.
We busted in the open
to this little sagebrush flat.
I thought I might as well enjoy the ride,
so I run my gut hooks in him
and he squealed just like a shoat.
From that time on,
I never touched his hide.
Bbm
I had a double handful
of them cotton -braided reins.
Ab
I'd never known a horse
this bad to buck.
If I could get in one more lick,
I'd miss the prickly pair.
I guess I wasn't born with that much luck.
I tried to hit a running,
but I must have tripped
and fell.
I landed where the
pair was fairly thick.
There wasn't nothing round that
clump
for near a hundred yards.
I only had to get in one more lick.
The first thing that I thought about
was walking back to camp.
Just knew he'd run off stepping on my reins,
but he was standing hip -shot,
soaking up the sun,
Cb
and stood there while I nursed my
Ab
aches and pains.
I didn't tell nobody,
but I think they must have known.
I'd hear them snicker as I rode away.
Ab
them spines had started festering
on my tender underside.
I had to ride like that for several days.
Well, the wagon was at cedar top.
I was headed into camp.
I had him in a gentle, easy lope.
Gb
When I seen a wormy two -year -old
I reined him in as I shook
Gb
Ab
down my rope.
Now, he's good at tracking cattle,
but this two -year -old was fast.
We'd lose her if she beat us to the trees.
So, run my gut hooks in him
and that sucker broke
in two.
Next thing I know,
my head's between my knees.
Cb
And then G .L. come riding up
He said, son, looks like
you run out of luck.
I guess I should have warned you.
There's one thing you better watch.
Ab
You hit him with them gut hooks,
he will buck.
But don't feel bad be
Ab
cause you got dumped.
He's pretty hard to ride.
You ain't the first good cowboy
that he's throwed.
Until you blowed your stirrups,
you was sittin' pretty tight.
One more lick, I think you had him rode.
Well, I finally got the picture.
Left my spurs in camp.
That lesson was a fairly easy
trade.
Ab
Because life is like that ringy bronc.
And every day, I think, one more lick,
this sucker's got her made. you
