Tom: Eb major
Verse 1
D
Hanukkah is a festival of lights,
but it is also a festival of darkness,
because it's only against the background of darkness
G
that you can see the light.
D
An d in fact, in the Talmud,
one rabbi, Yohanan, says
that the eye has a light part and a dark part,
but you can only see
through the dark part.
And part of what we've
learned from our history
is that sometimes through anguish
and pain and darkness,
we discover light and blessing
and goodness and God.
There is only one place
where the sun always shines
and it's called the desert.
Nothing grows there.
For things to grow,
there have to be shade,
Bm
there has to be shadow,
but we understand that though there
Em
D
is shadow inside of ourselves
and there is shadow in the world
and there always will be that
even though we don't accept it with joy
we approach it with wisdom
Em
and we light a candle so that we follow
D
the words of the psalmist
though we walk through
we trust in the miracle of the human soul,
we believe in our future,
A
Em
D
G
an d we are not afraid.
